Located near the town of Rokewood, the Golden Plains Wind Farm will span 16,739 hectares and feature 215 wind turbines when completed. The project is designed to generate over 4,000 GWh of electricity annually, enough to power more than 750,000 homes — equivalent to every household in regional Victoria. Clean energy production is expected to reduce carbon emissions by 4.5 million tons each year.
The project is being constructed in two stages. Golden Plains Wind Farm East began construction in early 2023 and will include 122 Vestas V162-6.2 MW wind turbines. These turbines are notable for their size, with 79-meter blades and hub heights of 149 meters, making them some of the largest and most powerful onshore turbines in Australia.
Through our best-in-class people, wind turbines and capabilities, Vestas is delighted to build and service this landmark project. As the world’s largest provider of wind energy, we have always been committed to Australia’s sustainable future and we thank TagEnergy, and our subcontractor partners, for joining us in this world-changing mission.
The second phase, Golden Plains Wind Farm West, started construction in early 2024. This stage will add 93 more turbines, contributing an additional 574 MW of capacity. With both stages now underway, the site employs over 350 workers.
Furthermore, the AU$3 billion project is creating approximately 700 construction jobs and will provide 70 permanent positions once operational. It’s also bringing infrastructure improvements to the local area, including upgraded roads.
By 2027, the Golden Plains Wind Farm aims to supply 9% of Victoria’s energy needs. The first stage is expected to start generating power in early 2025, with the second stage scheduled for mid-2027.
