Led by SKF specialists, the wind turbine bearing solutions course, held from November 5-7, 2024, at SKF’s Factory 3, provided participants with hands-on knowledge and insights into advanced bearing technologies that support the growing renewable energy sector.
Introduction to critical components
On the first day, SKF experts introduced participants to the fundamentals of wind turbine bearings, beginning with main shaft and gearbox bearings and their impact on turbine performance. The day progressed to cover shafts, housings, and abutments, essential components for stable bearing operation. The highlight of the day was a tour of SKF’s test center, which provided insights into the company’s rigorous testing methods. The day concluded with a networking dinner, where participants shared industry experiences.
Deepening technical knowledge
The second day of the course provided an in-depth look into technical topics, starting with calculations for predicting bearing life, a key tool for planning maintenance and maximizing uptime. SKF experts then covered damage analysis, focusing on common bearing issues and early identification techniques. The afternoon included a factory tour, offering further insights, followed by an evening wine tasting and dinner, which provided additional networking opportunities in a relaxed setting.
On the final day, the course covered lubrication specific to wind turbines, including best practices for grease application to ensure longevity. Participants also learned about the role of effective seals in preventing contamination, which is essential for optimal bearing performance. Later, an SKF repair specialist shared practical repair solutions designed to improve turbine reliability and reduce downtime.
Future opportunities
Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing appreciations for the practical insights and direct applicability of SKF’s expertise to their own projects. Many participants shared how much they appreciated SKF’s openness in discussing challenges and its commitment to finding practical solutions. The hands-on aspects of the course, like the factory tours and the chance to see and handle actual components and materials, stood out as particularly valuable. The evening events also received high praise for creating a warm, inclusive atmosphere, especially for those attending on their own. These thoughtful details not only enriched the overall experience but also helped build a strong sense of community among the attendees.
The SKF team was pleased with the success of the course and looks forward to hosting similar training events in the future to continue supporting the professional development of those working in the renewable energy sector. In the meantime, SKF offers a series of webinars to provide ongoing insights and resources, helping participants stay informed and connected on key industry developments.
