Catalonia powering forward – The Tres Termes wind farm

An ambitious renewable energy project, the Tres Termes wind farm, is currently under construction in the province of Tarragona in the Spanish region of Catalonia. The 30 MW project is an important part of the country's broader strategy to promote renewable energy in the region.

The Tres Termes project commenced construction in the second quarter of 2023 and is anticipated to be completed by the end of 2024. The wind farm will feature eight GE-130 wind turbines, each with a generating capacity of 3.8 MW. The total investment for this project is approximately 40 million euros.

Notably, this project has been in the planning stages since its announcement in the first quarter of 2009. The specific details of the extended planning phase are not available, but in general, large-scale wind projects such as Tres Termes can face various challenges, such as regulatory and permitting challenges, environmental impact assessments, securing financing, logistical and technical challenges, and sometimes local opposition or legal disputes.

Once operational, the wind farm is expected to produce approximately 87 GWh per year, which is equivalent to the electricity needs of approximately 26,700 households. This production capacity is also significant in terms of its environmental impact, as it could potentially reduce CO2 emissions by more than 43,500 tons per year. The reduction is roughly equivalent to removing more than 18,000 vehicles from the road each year!

Moreover, the construction of the Tres Termes wind farm is estimated to create around 400 direct and indirect jobs, with a focus on subcontracting local companies from the Terra Alta region and the province of Tarragona.

Naturgy, the company behind the project, has already initiated two other wind farms in Catalonia earlier this year – Los Barrancs (23 MW) and Punta Redona (27 MW) – and has acquired two more, contributing significantly to the renewable energy capacity in the region. They aim to reach nearly 250 renewable MW in the coming years.
